Fourth graders
at Los Alamitos celebrate California Gold Rush Day each spring. History comes
alive for the students with a variety of exciting hands-on activities.
Gold Rush Day features:
- Mini Stream
The students will actually mine for gold nuggets
- Assay Office
Gold is weighed and "cash" is given in exchange
- Print Shop
Students make "Wanted Posters" of themselves
- Sack Shop
Students embroider small pouches to hold their goodies
- Photo Shop
A photo is taken of two friends at a time
- General Store
Students use their "cash" to purchase candy, pickles, jerky,
apples, etc.
- Sarsaparilla Saloon
Students drink "spirits" (root beer) and play cards
- Miner's Tent
Students learn to tie knots in an old fashioned tent
- Jail
Students are put into Jail for the crimes on their "Wanted
Posters"
- Wagon Shop
To learn about days of old, a real covered wagon is on display that is
provided by Fallbrook Farms
- Square Dancing
Students can choose to participate in this energetic type of dance
- Kitchen Shop
Students will make butter and jam that will be eaten later with their
lunch
- Lunch
Old fashion lunch of beans, hot dogs, sourdough bread (with butter and
jam) and root beer
With everybody's help, the day is an exciting learning opportunity.
Donations and volunteers are needed. Sign up sheets will be sent home
approximately four weeks before Gold Rush Day but if you have questions or want to volunteer earlier,
please contact any of the 4th grade teachers. Thank you in advance for
assisting in this most valuable learning experience!
